Roxanne Quimby and Burt Shavitz are the eco-preneurs behind Burt’s Bees. In 1984 the company started to market more than 150 products in Maine. Their shop was an old schoolhouse. The company is dedicated to using natural ingredients, recycled packaging and doing good for mankind.
In 1968, Tom and Kate Chappell launched the Tom’s of Maine company. They had moved to rural Maine in search of a quieter and simpler lifestyle. When they couldn’t find deodorant and toothpaste that was natural enough for their tastes, they got a loan for $5000 and started their small business.
