Why do many go to work when they are sick? Two in five workers (44 percent) would rather go to work with a cold or flu than waste a sick day. If they do stay home, it is most often because of their symptoms (49 percent) and not so often due to workload concerns (18 percent).
What does the boss think? Less than half (47 percent) of the working adults surveyed agreed with the statement that their bosses would prefer they stay home rather than come to work with a cold or flu.
Whether at home or at work, nearly all adults (92 percent) say they are very aware of the risk of infection and actively attempt to prevent the spread of cold and flu germs when they are sick. Washing hands often was the primary tactic of 80 percent of
those surveyed. More than half said they make sure to sneeze into a facial tissue (55
percent) and avoid physical contact with others (57 percent), and 42 percent say they use a hand sanitizing lotion or gel. About two in five (41 percent) stay home.
This Cold and Flu survey was conducted online within the United States by Harris Interactive on behalf of Kimberly-Clark Kleenex Brand between September 19 and September 23, 2008 among 2,507 adults ages 18+, of whom, 1,330 are employed full time and/or part time.
