The town of Rumson, New Jersey has taken their St. Patrick’s Day Parade and turned it into not only a celebrating of the holiday, but a community gathering and business builder for the entire town. Could you take a holiday in your community such as St. Patrick’s Day and turn it into a similar celebration to generate interest in your downtown small businesses?
According to the Rumson St. Patrick’s Day committee website, “To everyone that sponsored, marched, watched, or worked on the 2013 St. Patrick’s Day Parade, thank you for making it a great success. We would like to extend a very special “thank you” to our 2013 Grand Marshal Tim McLoone, his family and organization for their time and commitment and to Fox 5′s JoAnn Pileggi for announcing the parade. The Rumson Police estimate that there were over 4,000 spectators. Add that to the over 800 participants, and it was a great day for Rumson plus a great day for the Irish.”
Second Annual Rumson St. Patrick’s Day Parade
The Second Annual Rumson St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be held on Sunday, March 9, 2014 beginning at 1:00 PM. Once again it will be a festival of color, music, and fun and will feature 8 bag pipe bands, floats, marching bands from area high schools, Irish Step Dancers, antique & classic cars, veteran groups, scouting organizations, non-profit clubs & organizations, schools, novelty acts, and local and area business and civic groups.
Says the Rumson St. Patrick’s Day Parade committee, “Our goals are still the same; presenting a safe, fun-filled parade for the entire family and promoting the awareness and appreciation of the many contributions the Irish-American community has made to our American culture, business, and government. We want to especially thank Brigadier General Peter (Pete) Dawkins (US Army Retired) for agreeing to serve as our Grand Marshal, as this year we will be honoring the brave men and women of the military for their service to our country.
“There will also be several parade fundraisers with Irish music, food, and a few other surprises. (after all, when we have fun, we do have to pay the pipers!) These various fundraisers not only help us pay the parade costs but enable the Board to make donations to various local charities. For a listing of the charities supported last year and those chosen for 2014, click on the Grants Awarded tab.
