football and small business

You can learn small business lessons from NFL Football. While you’re enjoying the NFL Playoff games this weekend, remember there are entrepreneurial lessons to be learned from professional football.

To get the most out of your team, trust your inexperienced employees to get the job done if necessary and make sure they’re prepared by having them learn how to handle a variety of responsibilities, Jaimy Ford says. “When people learn how to perform different roles, your business is better prepared to handle the unexpected,” she writes. These are among the lessons that businesses can learn from outstanding football teams, Ford says.

There are plenty of ways we can look at events in the world and learn from their values, focus, drive, leadership and positioning in the marketplace. Take a look at sports or companies and brands you admire. What can you learn from them? How do you approach your team at work? Are you a leader? Do you let others step in and take the lead? Would you describe yourself as a team player? And what about your role as a coach? Do you inspire your employees to do the best they can? Do you give them the freedom to develop their own style and moves in the workplace?

Take an inventory of how you approach your small business each day and see how you can better incorporate winning team strategies that will help propel your game to the very top. Strive to be the greatest coach and player in your league. Get to the Superbowl in your industry. What will it take to make your team the best it can be? Incorporate the styles and motivation of your favorite NFL teams and you might find yourself getting a trophy that will translate to more sales, more profit and more money for your small business enterprise.
