Many supermarkets and restaurants are making strides to cut food waste and feed those in need. As much as 40% of food produced in the U.S. is never eaten, according to the Food Waste Reduction Alliance. Meanwhile, 50 million Americans suffer from food insecurity, according to the USDA. To alleviate the problem, Darden Restaurants locations are aligned with food banks and have donated more than 67 million pounds of food in 10 years. Several grocery chains also are working on initiatives, including clearing up consumer confusion about “sell by,” “use by” and “best by” dates.
