Bosses who want to cultivate open and trusting relationships with their workers should get into the habit of holding one-on-one meetings, says business expert Mary Schaefer. Regular face time lets you rehearse your relationship in a safe space, laying a foundation for higher-stake interactions, Schaefer explains. “You get to practice being open with each other. Then, when one of you has a difficult message to deliver there’s less room for misunderstanding or defensiveness,” she says.
