How Subway’s Fred DeLuca Built World’s Largest Restaurant Chain

Subway founder Fred DeLuca opened his first sandwich shop at the age of 17, using $1,000 he’d borrowed from a family friend — and now he’s overtaken McDonald’s to turn Subway into the world’s biggest restaurant chain. The secret, he says, was an aggressive franchising policy that gave heavy discounts and incentives to restaurant operators who worked as “development agents” to groom other franchisees.
