Josh Cohen grew a college side gig into a multi-million dollar business and is now expanding it throughout New York City. Josh founded Junkluggers in 2004 after he heard a friend say he made $100 hauling an old refrigerator away for a neighbor and the idea stuck with him. Josh began using his mother’s SUV to run his part-time junk removal service and make some money on the side. After graduating college, Josh built up business in Connecticut where he transitioned to using a full-sized truck, and eventually took the risk to quit his full-time career as a commercial real estate agent, and move the business to New York City, and headquarters in Manhattan.
Eight years since the company’s inception, with no employees older than 30, the company reported $2.3 million in sales in 2012 and have hauled more than 4,500 tons of junk. Junkluggers recently began franchising and is currently aggressively expanding throughout central New York, Long Island, Connecticut and New Jersey. They are currently signing their first two franchisee to open 21 new locations in NY and 43 all together this year. The company has a unique eco-friendly concept, where all junk is sorted to find what can be recycled or donated to organizations and charities.
Founded in 2004 after his return to the U.S from studying abroad, Josh Cohen hit the streets handing out homemade flyers all around town. After the phone began to ring, Cohen quickly realized there was a demand for a reliable, professional and eco-focused removal service. Once armed with only his mom’s SUV and a love for the environment, Cohen launched Junkluggers and has revolutionized the hauling and removal industry by focusing on environmentally friendly and community oriented junk removal practices. The New York City-based company, which services the surrounding metropolitan area and states, is now offering franchise opportunities with the aim of spreading its in-demand services throughout the country.
