When President Obama signed the JOBS Act last year, he made it possible for individuals to invest in a wide variety of small businesses, projects and dreams. Crowdfunding is booming. There are more than 600 platforms dedicated to the fund-raising phenomenon. More than $1.7 billion has been raised for projects on these sites and $900 million in the U.S. alone. Some of the platforms include: Kickstarter, RocketHub, GoFundMe, IndieGoGo, Kiva, buzzentrepreneur and MicroVentures.
If you haven’t looked into crowdfunding to help start your business, market your hot sauce, or develop your invention, you are missing an opportunity that could help you establish your venture or work of art.
One particularly captivating example on Kickstarter is Phoebe Legere’s ShamanCycle: a giant 10-person Eagle Bicycle with Beautiful Metal Wings and Flaming Eyeballs! Visionary Green Art Transportation! The ShamanCycle is equal parts dynamic art sculpture and multiperson bicycle. It is made of reclaimed and re-purposed metal parts. According to the ShamanCycle’s inventor and imagineer Phoebe Legere, “Our pedalers power the lights, sound, and all devices onboard the ShamanCycle. One of my dreams in creating the ShamanCycle is to demonstrate that we can bring diverse communities together through Art collaboration.”
We could see a ShamanCycle in every town! Fun transportation that is eco-friendly and provides an opportunity for pedalers to socialize while they exercise! Win-win-win.
