In 1968, Tom and Kate Chappell launched the Tom’s of Maine company. They had moved to rural Maine in search of a quieter and simpler lifestyle. When they couldn’t find deodorant and toothpaste that was natural enough for their tastes, they got a loan for $5000 and started their small business.
